Today, I had the pleasure of spending most of my morning with Fatima, Fatna, Maka, and Soumaya. It was a wonderful, calm joy that I experienced as I watched the four Little Ripples (LR) cooks prepare a meal for the children of families that were taking part in an assessment at the school. It felt similar to the many hours I spent as a boy talking with my mom as she prepared food for the family. She would often tell me stories of her childhood, and I listened and watched — hypnotized — as the ingredients came together to create our meals.
The LR cooks worked together like dancers performing a choreographed routine. They talked, and laughed, and took the time to care for their children—and even sing to them! The food was prepared with beautiful patience, and in the end, it looked and smelled delicious. The young children, most of them not students at Little Ripples, ate it with serious focus and clear delight.
The rice with sheep meat was prepared with coconut oil, salt, onion, red root, white root, garlic paste, tomato paste, water, and lots of love.
